Your homework for tonight is to re-read Abby's Lament. However, you should be practicing your critical reading methods (skimming, note-taking, highlighting, summary, paraphrase, and so forth). In addition, you should also be taking notes on major key terms or concepts. Identify major concepts like literacy or power and try to define those terms. You may use the text, the author's source, or your own interpretation. You should have at least 4 key terms by the start of class on Tuesday.

I understand with all the confusion on the first day with technology, website access, and e-mails, many of you were not able to complete the assigned assignments. I will grant an extension for Reader Response 1 and Diagnostic Essay. The new due date for these two assignment is Monday, October 1, 2012 at the start of class. Please print your essay, if you experience issues when printing, you can also e-mail me your assignments.

Homework

Remember, you have two assignments tonight.

Reader response assignment

The first assignment is to read chapters 1 and 2 and write a reading response using the Readers Response Prompt. As I mentioned in class, do not feel stressed about this assignment. Do the best you can with what you know about writing. The prompt gives you about five questions to consider when developing your response. You do not need to answer all of the questions. I suggest that you pick at least two questions and work from there.

And remember, I want you start practicing MLA format. This means that your essay should be double spaced, Times New Roman, and 12 point font. I am looking for at least 2 pages for your reader response. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail by clicking here.

This assignment is due at the start of class on Tuesday, September 27, 2012. Please print your essay. If you need me to print your essay for you, please e-mail your assignment half hour before the class begins.

Diagnostic essay assignment

For this assignment, you are being asked to read Abby's Lament: Does Literacy Matter?, which can also be downloaded from the readings page. Once you finish reading the article, please follow the directions on the diagnostic essay prompt, which can be found on page 1 of the essay prompt packet.

Make sure you take time to read the essay. I suggest that you read through it once and read it again. However, the second time that you read it, I suggest that you take notes and highlight what seems important to you.

Again, I am looking for you do your best to respond to the questions on the sheet. Do your best to formulate your thoughts and ideas. I want you to start practicing MLA format, so your essay should be double spaced, Times New Roman, and 12 point font. I am looking for at least 1 page for this essay.
